DRAFT LONDON PLAN PROPOSES ADDITIONAL GYPSY, TRAVELLER AND TRAVELLING SHOWMEN SITES FOR HAVERING

The Mayor of London published his draft London Plan for consultation late last year.  His plan included the proposal for 42 Pitches for Gypsy, Travellers and Travelling Showmen in Havering.

As we know Upminster has large areas of Green Belt and this would be put at risk if the plan was agreed unchanged. We had recently successfully fought the Park Farm Road site plans so the community have strong views.  I know many residents wrote to the Mayor setting out objections to his plans.  My own letter objecting set out clearly, based on the Mayors own information, that Havering was being told it would have to absorb a disproportionate number compared to demonstrated need.  I was invited to attend the preliminary meeting which is preparation for the Enquiry in Public which follows in June.  I am very pleased to report that the Mayor has listened to protests and has published an amendment to his London Plan covering this issue.

The overall reduction to pitches in London is just over 50% and that corresponding reduction is reflected in Havering's reduction, from 42 to 19. This proposal is now out for further consultation so it still remains a proposal.

Consultation runs until 11 May and full information can be accessed via the GLA web site, current consultations. If this is finally agreed it will still mean that Havering will have the largest target allocation in London.  I would urge you all to view the revised consultation document and write to the Mayor with your views.
