£21m CONTRIBUTION - BUT NO TICKET DEAL FOR HAVERING |
Tickets for the Olympic Games in 2012 will become available next year, but Havering residents, along with the rest of Greater London, will not receive any preferential treatment for the 10 million tickets.
Cllr Clarence Barrett (Cranham RA), who spearheaded a campaign to cap the levy in 2006, said: “While the Games will be a great boost to the UK, it is worth remembering that the residents of Havering will be paying some £21m towards the £9.3bn Olympic sized bill.
An Olympic Levy of £20 per household (based on Band D average) has been included in the council tax bill for every property across Greater London which will raise £625m towards the overall £9.3bn costs of staging the Olympics. The Levy was introduced in 2006/07 and will remain in place until 2017 when the full £625m is collected.
Cllr Barrett continued: “In times of severe financial constraints it is important that we obtain reasonable value for money. There needs to be a much clearer demonstration of benefit to the residents of Havering which is in some way proportionate with the contribution we are making.
“I am disappointed that, despite making a £625m contribution through council tax, residents across Greater London will receive no preference,
“However, I am pleased that the iconic Upminster Windmill has been chosen for our 2012 Olympic pin badge, but am disappointed that even this we will have to pay an additional sum for”.
Allocation of the tickets will be subject to a ballot which takes place in the spring of 2011. Price of tickets is yet unknown but a registration of interest can be lodged by calling 0844 847 2012 or visit http://www.tickets.london2012.com/ .
